Artistic director Akira Shirai, who has directed numerous works by Philip Ridley, will present Ridley's children's books as a theatrical production that both adults and children can enjoy!
Set in a town where a tower is being built, we will tell the story of a slightly strange and somewhat strange family spanning three generations.

I am really happy that we were able to bring together the power of the cast and staff to create a stage adaptation of Philip Ridley's "Mercedes Ice".After all, this world view is a unique one that only Ridley can make.
The time I spent creating through trial and error with all the young actors was like a jewel for me.It was also very exciting to see how the children would react.Interesting, boring, fun, or scary?
When I left the theater, seeing the grinning faces of the children made me feel very happy.
I sincerely hope that the experience at this theater will be burned into the minds of children and lead to wonderful memories.

Recreation as a work for children living "now" with young actors

At the Setagaya Public Theater in March 2023,Akira ShiraiWe will perform "MERCEDES ICE" by the production.

This work is a work created by Shirai in 2012 based on the children's novel of the same name by British playwright Philip Ridley.Shirai has worked on many Ridley works so far, and has performed five works at the Setagaya Public Theater. As he says, "From the moment I encounter his work, the world written in it emerges as a picture in my head." You can call me a writer.

The story depicts three generations of people living in a huge tower (Shadow Point) in the center of the city, living with love, hate, joy and sorrow.Appearing are all familiar things, such as fishmongers, cake shops, and construction of skyscraper apartments, but what is spreading there is a strange and fantastic world that has never been seen for some reason.But before you know it, it's filled with a mysterious charm that reveals the essence of our lives and society.

This work, which Shirai himself had a feeling of "I would definitely like to do again", will be recreated as a work for children living in the "now" with young actors who are remarkably growing.

OUR STORY

——Three generations of family living in “Shadow Point”——

Mercedes Ice is the "Prince of the Shadow Tower" who knows everything about the Shadow Tower.
One day, the world will be a world without black and white colors.
Toy robots, dollhouses, sweets and chocolates... The last thing I wanted was "color".

Part 1｜ Rosie, a girl born between mother Doll and father Harold, and Timothy, a boy born between mother Sandra and father Joseph, meet and grow up.Rosie and Timothy loved the Tower of Shadows.

Part 2｜ Rosie and Timothy are married and living in their favorite Tower of Shadows.
The two of them live while quarreling, getting fat, and their hair thinning.A boy is born to Rosie and Timothy.His name is "Mercedes Ice".

Part 3｜ As time passed, the Tower of Shadows grew dirty and decayed.
Mrs. Ice doted on Mercedes Ice and began to give him everything he asked for.
Mercedes and Hickory, who lives next door, grow up together and play together in the old tower, but Hickory is swayed by Mercedes' selfishness, who thinks of himself as the "Prince of the Shadow Tower". increase.
