Presenting Theatre Tram Next Generation vol. 13!
The next installment in our program to discover new talent!

The purpose of SePT’s Theatre Tram Next Generation program is to discover and nurture talented young artists.

Once a year, SePT invites theatre and performance groups to apply to this program. Selected groups are offered an opportunity to perform at Theatre Tram, and they are provided with support from the theatre. This program has helped to foster a number of the most talented companies in Japan’s modern theatre scene, including Faifai, FUKAIPRODUCE Hagoromo, Minamoza, Tegami-za, Takuro Suzuki, Dorobo Taisaku Light, and Warui Shibai.

The upcoming vol. 13 of this series will feature PANCETTA. PANCETTA is the performance unit helmed by playwright and director Shuhei Ichinomiya, who has gathered a great deal of attention for his unique use of space and highly original use of language.

The play “un” is set in a near future in which human beings no longer need to pass urine or stool, thanks to technological advancement. Don’t miss your chance to experience the lighthearted, surreal, and hilarious world of this performance that occupies the space between theatre and sketch comedy.

<Summary>

We human beings have evolved over a long span of time. We have acquired new methods of travel, we have gained the ability to communicate with people we have never even met before, we are free to ingest all the nourishment we could ever want, and we live in safe dwellings. You could possibly say that our days are consumed in the pursuit of further human development. We continue to evolve, even now. This play is the story of a not too distant future, in which people no longer possess the concept of the need to eat or excrete.

<Profile of Shuhei Ichinomiya>

Artistic Director and founder of PANCETTA
Playwright, director, and actor
Born in 1989

By pushing the human body as far as it can go, Shuhei Ichinomiya makes work that reveals new possibilities of creative expression. In his work, sounds, light, and bodies that exist on an otherwise bare stage come together to create a unique experience of time that awakens the viewer’s imagination and draws them into a world that is truly one of a kind. His work also pursues new forms of expression by frequently drawing upon unique elements of Japanese culture and the Japanese language. In his pursuit of creating interesting theater, Ichinomiya keeps in mind the importance of making work that is valuable precisely because it is live and in person. In recent years, Ichinomiya has directed pieces for other companies, directed a staged reading in a hotel, and staged a performance in an art gallery with no seating, during which the audience moved along with the actors. This has allowed him to explore a variety of performances spaces, both inside and outside traditional theatres.
