Setagaya Public Theatre is notable for holding reading performances of plays to explore the possibilities of staging new texts.

For this reading performance, SePT will be presenting Timon of Athens, one of William Shakespeare’s most problematic plays.
For this performance, leading Shakespeare scholar and translator, Shoichiro Kawai has prepared a specially adapted script, which SePT Artistic Director Mansai Nomura will be directing himself, opening new avenues for future stagings.

Story
Timon ( performed by Mansai Nomura), a wealthy nobleman of Athens, loves to host sumptuous parties for his friends – aristocrats, poets, artists and senators. Timon ignores the warnings of his loyal steward, Flavius, and the wry philosopher Apemantus, and does not hesitate to hand out goods and wealth to anyone he meets. But finally, Timon finds himself penniless. After his requests for loans are denied by those who he had so generously given to, Timon loses faith in humanity, and withdraws into a cave deep within the woods.
