Mansai Nomura has lead Setagaya Public Theatre (SePT) as its Artistic Director for 20 years.

Mansai has placed an emphasis on work that blends modern and classical theatre, including in his own productions of numerous works by Shakespeare.

For this performance, Mansai presents a new entry in the SePT Play-Reading Programme featuring excerpts from Hamlet, one of the great works of classical theatre that also became a turning point for Mansai himself.

Mansai Nomura began his tenure as Artistic Director of SePT in 2002, and he will retire from that role at the end of March 2022. In February, after presenting MANSAI: Kaitai-Shinsho: No.32: The Finale: The MANSAI Manifesto: Never Forget Your Beginner’s Spirit, Mansai will also present a staged reading of excerpts from Hamlet as part of the SePT’s play-reading program.

Mansai has drawn on his unique abilities as a performer of the traditional Japanese comic theater form known as kyogen in order to stage works of Shakespeare at SePT. These performances include his original kyogen-influenced adaptations of A Comedy of Errors and Richard III, his staging of Macbeth, and a staged reading of Timon of Athens presented as part of the SePT’s play-reading program. In these performances, Mansai created a fusion of modern and classical theatre, staging Shakespeare from his own unique perspective.

For this production, Mansai presents an original arrangement of the text of Hamlet that expresses his own unique interpretation. This staged reading focuses on the theme of “antinomy” in Hamlet, as symbolized by the famous line “to be or not to be.” By drawing on this theme of antinomy, Mansai will present a thorough exploration of Hamlet’s identity. Don’t miss your chance to see this production!
