The latest installment in SePT’s popular, long-running play-reading program will feature “PICTURES OF YOUR TRUE LOVE” a dramatization of “Pictures of Your True Love: An Unfinished Novel” by the German author Wolfgang Herrndorf.
Published posthumously in 2014, “Pictures of Your True Love” was the sequel to Herrndorf’s 2010 masterpiece “Tschick” (titled “Why We Took the Car” in English), the coming-of-age tale of two 14-year-old boys that rising young dramatist Yuna Koyama — who was born and brought up in Hamburg — chose for her debut staging at SePT in August last year.
In fact that acclaimed production, featuring sparkling performances from lead actors Akinobu Shinoyama and Tokio Emoto, earned Koyama a prestigious Yomiuri Drama Award for her direction as well as a Yushi Odashima Translation Award.
Now, in the wake of that success, the upcoming readings of “PICTURES OF YOUR TRUE LOVE” follow a request from scriptwriter Robert Koall, who dramatized both novels, for Koyama to present the work in Japan.
In this standalone piece, the central role is that of its titular character, a mysterious 14-year-old girl first encountered in “Tschick” living on a garbage dump after leaving home. But where does she come from? What’s her dream for the future? And has anyone ever really cared about her?
“PICTURES OF YOUR TRUE LOVE” is a moving portrayal of this charming young person’s yearnings and heart-rending sorrows that’s sure to recall for many their pains and lost dreams of youth, even as it celebrates life itself.
With the vibrant actress Kie Kitano as Isa and Akinobu Shinoyama back in the role of “a man,” these readings — with live music by famed guitarist/composer Kazuki Kunihiro — are surely set to be among the sparkling highlights of SePT’s winter schedules.
