Ohanashi no mori is full of stories. There are stories you already know, stories you might think you know but have actually forgotten, and stories you’ve never heard before. What stories will you hear? That’s our special surprise for everyone who comes to this performance!
Goodbye summer, hello autumn! The Ohanashi no mori performance planned for August was delayed to prevent the spread of Covid-19, but now we can finally present it to you this October. This performance features the musician ROLLY and the actor Jin Katagiri. ROLLY appears on NHK Educational TV’s Musica Piccolino, and Katagiri appears on the same network’s Shakiin! Adults and children alike will be mesmerized by their riveting storytelling.
ROLLY began his career as a musician 30 years ago. In addition to his work as a musician, he is also active as a performer who has worked in theater, television, and radio. He has recently appeared in works including the movie Hit Me Anyone One More Time (written and directed by Koki Mitani) and two musicals, Big Fish and The Rocky Horror Show. ROLLY has appeared in Ohanashi no mori for 11 consecutive years. At Ohanashi no mori, he reads picture books to the audience while playing the guitar. At his performances, the stage is bathed in blue light and illuminated by a mirrored disco ball, taking the audience on what feels like a journey to outer space. ROLLY transforms the theater space with singing and guitar playing that resonate throughout the entire venue.
Jin Katagiri is an actor who has worked in theater, television, film, and radio. Recent TV appearances include 99.9 Criminal Lawyer. He also creates clay sculptures, showcasing his work both in Japan and abroad with his touring Giri Ten(Giri Exhibit). This is his 3rd year performing in Ohanashi no mori. The characters from the stories he reads seem to truly come alive through his entertaining performances. This year will also once again feature a rousing performance by the Bakurocho Band.
This year’s Ohanashi no mori will be held at the Setagaya Public Theatre. It’s a bigger space than the usual venue of Theatre Tram. For this event, both performers read from picture books while the images from those books are displayed on a screen onstage. The Setagaya Public Theater is a beautiful space with majestic stone walls and a ceiling painted with the image of a gorgeous blue sky. It’s the perfect place to spend time with these amazing performers, picture books, and music. We can’t wait to see you at the theatre!
*This performance features distanced seating in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
