An Enduring Masterpiece Returns to the Stage Through the Efforts of One of South Korea’s Leading Directors and a Japanese and Korean Cast
Written by the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen in 1867, Peer Gynt tells the story of an unfettered young man by that name and of the checkered career he follows. This extremely well known play has been widely and frequently performed ever since its stage premier in 1876.
The creative force behind the present production, the energetic stage director Jungung Yang, is an internationally acclaimed director with an impressive string of achievements. He was the first representative of Korean theatre to have been invited to stage productions in the UK, first at the Barbican Centre in 2006 and later at Globe Theatre in 2012. More recently, Yang has also been gathering attention since he was appointed to direct the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
For his new production of Peer Gynt, Yang has gathered together a cast of 20 Japanese and Korean actors for an international cultural exchange project that is an appropriate way of celebrating the 20th anniversary of Setagaya Public Theatre, which has a rich history of showcasing first-class artists and established works from past eras.
This performance is being jointly organized, planned, produced and staged by Setagaya Public Theatre and Hyogo Performing Arts Center.

Story
Peer Gynt (Kenji Urai) is a romantic youth. He lives a freewheeling life, much to the chagrin of his mother Åse (Marcia), who worries about his future. Peer starts living with Solveig (Shuri), a woman who is attracted to his innocent spirit, but he is led astray by a voice from the darkness that tells him, “Go roundabout, Peer.” Heeding the voice, he leaves Solveig, crosses the sea, and wanders around the world. At the end of his myriad adventures, which are filled with ups and downs that see him make and then lose a fortune, he returns to his hometown, but——. Peer’s magnificent “journey of self discovery” in which he pursues his true self to the ends of the earth, is a story that remains fresh and vivid even 150 years after it was first written down.
Profile
Director: Jungung Yang
Born in 1968, Yang is the founder and director of South Korea’s Yohangza Theatre Company and a professor of courses in drama at the Department of Theatre of Seoul Institute of the Arts. After graduating from the Department of Creative Writing of the Seoul Institute of the Arts, for two years beginning in 1994 he collaborated with actors from many countries including Spain, Japan, India, etc. In 1996 he returned to South Korea, where he launched the theatrical company Yeo-haeng-ja (Traveller). Since then, he has employed his unique experimental direction, which integrates tradition with contemporary drama, to interweave the body, language and images colorfully in space. He has been described as a leader in nurturing the world’s next generation of theatrical performers.
Yang has remained active internationally. For instance, in 2006, in a remarkable first for a Korean practitioner of theatre, his adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which he dramatized and directed, was presented by the Yohangza Theatre Company at the Barbican Theatre in London, and in 2012 the company was again invited back to London to perform this play at the Shakespeare Globe Theatre as part of season commemorating the 2012 London Olympics. Currently, Yang is also working on the production of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
