Lecture “Modern Circus: The Charms and Possibilities of Expression that Reflect the Times”
Modern circus was born in France in the 1970s as an artistic "new circus" (Nouveau Cirque).It spread mainly in Europe and America, merging with theater and dance, and began to be introduced in Japan in the 1990s.
This time, we will welcome Michiko Tanaka of Setouchi Circus, a leading contemporary circus expert in Japan, and Yosuke Meguro, performer of "Fierce 5", to talk about the modern circus scene in Europe and America, initiatives in Japan, and the creative environment. Let's talk about the differences.

Overview
Modern circus was born in France in the 1970s as an artistic "new circus" (Nouveau Cirque).It spread mainly in Europe and America, merging with theater and dance, and began to be introduced in Japan in the 1990s.Nowadays, it continues to evolve as a platform that accepts free ideas without being bound by any genre or conventional framework.
In addition to its role as a performing arts, circus is also attracting attention as a means of solving social problems such as poverty, disability, and gender gaps, and ``social circus,'' which utilizes circus methods and techniques, is spreading worldwide.
This time, we will be inviting Ms. Michiko Tanaka of Setouchi Circus, a leading authority on modern circus in Japan, to talk about the modern circus scene in Europe and the United States and her efforts in Japan.
We would also like to touch on the differences in creative environments with Yosuke Meguro, a performer in the France x Japan contemporary circus exchange project "Fierce 10," which was performed at the Setagaya Public Theater in October.

Michiko Tanaka

Born in Hokkaido.In 2004, when she was working in the business department of a newspaper company, she was involved in the invitation of a French contemporary circus, and was shocked by the way of life of circus artists who "survive with their bodies alone."A few years later, he retired and went to France to become a professional producer. In 2009, he published his first contemporary circus book in Japan, "Circus ni Aitai -French Circus that Became Art-".She is in charge of performing arts for the Echigo-Tsumari Earth Art Festival, Setouchi Triennale 2010. In 2011, the activities of "Setouchi Circus Factory" began, and in 2014, it became a general incorporated association.Based in Kagawa, he creates and presents works nationwide, and also works on human resource development.
Yousuke Meguro
Juggler, director. He started juggling at the age of 14, and since the age of 17 he has been performing in street performances, festivals, stages, and live houses. In 2008, he formed the juggling and music group ``Nagame Kurashitsu'' with himself as the main player, and is responsible for directing and composing almost all of the performances. Since 2013, he has also been active as a unit ``Utsushiomi'' with aerial artist Manami Hasegawa.His external appearances include ``Twelfth Night'' and ``Aerial Cabaret,'' directed by Kazumi Kushida.As a rare contemporary circus director in Japan, he has also directed performances related to Setouchi Circus Factory's ``100 Year Circus'' and ``naimono,'' and Setagaya Public Theater's ``Goku: The Beginning of Adventure.''
He has appeared in the France x Japan contemporary circus exchange project "Fierce 10", which was performed in October of this year, since its premiere in 5.
