Mansai Nomura, who has launched numerous Shakespeare works, will pass the baton on to the next generation.

At the Setagaya Public Theater in March 2023,Nomura MansaiWe will perform "Hamlet" by directing and performing.

Mansai Nomura, who has led the Setagaya Public Theater as artistic director since 2002, will perform in February 2022 as the final performance of his term, and will entrust a message to the next generation of theater people. It was from "Hamlet".Hamlet, in which he himself has played the title role multiple times, is composed from the perspective of pursuing Hamlet's identity by trying to fuse classic and modern drama while making full use of the characteristics of being a Kyogen performer. The stage was well received as "Hamlet" unique to Mansai Nomura.

And in the main performance in March 2023, Mansai Nomura will continue to direct, and will play the ghost of his late father, who guides Hamlet, and his uncle, King Claudius, who assassinates his father and marries Hamlet's mother. rice field.Through the two opposite roles of his father and his enemy, he comes face to face with Yuki Nomura, who plays the role of Hamlet, his son and art disciple, on stage.

Yuki NomuraFor me, the reading version of Hamlet in February 2022 was the first performance to appear on a stage other than Kyogen. His serif skills, which he has trained in Kyogen since childhood, and his dignified demeanor made the solitary image of Prince Hamlet stand out and received applause from the audience.
Oddly enough, his father, Mansai, also played the role of Hamlet, who made his debut in a translated play, and took over the baton from his father.

Yuki Nomura, Keito Okamoto, Sawako Fujima and other fresh faces appear
Mayumi Wakamura, Takehiro Murata, and Kunitaro Kawarasaki, who co-created "Sacred Meridian", will also appear.

In this work, in addition to the highly trusted staff and cast members who have created works with Mansai Nomura, we will bring together young theater people who will be responsible for the next generation.
Yuuki Nomura, Keito Okamoto, and Sawako Fujima all followed in the footsteps of their parents and immersed themselves in the same world of art.
Playing two roles: Ophelia's older brother, Laertes, who confronts Hamlet, and the courtier RosencrantzKeito Okamotois.Okamoto, who studied at America's oldest drama school, has appeared in a series of much-talked-about stage performances, and has been highly praised for his fresh acting ability, will raise expectations for how he will play these two roles.
The role of Ophelia, who loves Hamlet, is Murasaki Fujima III, who also works as the head of the Japanese dance Murasaki school Fujima school, while also belonging to the Asagaya Spiders.Fujima Sawakois played byFujima, who is active across genres such as video, contemporary drama, and Japanese dance, is a must-see for Ophelia, who makes use of her multi-talented talents.
Hamlet's friend and confidant HoratioYasuyuki Unezawais dressed asAlthough he is young, Takuzawa, who has a reputation for his solid acting skills cultivated at Bungakuza, will be close to Hamlet played by Yuki.

Furthermore, the appearance of talented actors full of luxury and charm has come true.Mayumi Wakamura, Takehiro Murata, Kunitaro Kawarasaki, and others who have worked together on the production of Mansai Nomura's production of Meridian Line (2017, 2021).

In "Meridian Enshrinement", he played Tomomori Taira's mind and shadow body, played by Mansai Nomura, and played Queen Gertrude in a high-class reading performance.Mayumi WakamuraWill continue to play the same role, and will show the complicated mother-child relationship with her son Hamlet with a deep performance.
And to Polonius, the father of Laertes and Ophelia,Murata Takehirois dressed asExpectations are high for Murata's character portraits that are full of compassion and a sense of scale. Also, the chairman of the traveling entertainer troupe isKunitaro Kawarasakiappears. Please fully enjoy the taste of a skilled actor.Murata and Kunitaro have a long history of acting, but this is the first time for both of them to appear in Shakespeare's work, which should be one of the highlights.

Please look forward to "Hamlet," which can be said to be the culmination of Mansai Nomura, who has worked on numerous Shakespeare works.

Comment from Mansai Nomura

It is the third challenge after experiencing the title role of Hamlet twice. This time, however, it's the staging, the ghost of the king who guides and deceives Hamlet, and the role of the antagonistic uncle. The fact that I, who has experience playing Hamlet, plays these two roles, and that I am teaming up with my son, Yuki Nomura, who has a master-student relationship and is a constant co-star (rival), is a big point in directing. In this play, blood ties are intricately entwined, but there is a crisis of national existence that cannot be contained in a family drama. For us parents and children, the crisis of the survival of traditional Japanese culture seems to overlap.

On the other hand, in the real world, neighboring countries started a war, the former prime minister was assassinated, and the queen died. And the agony of the gray reality that is indivisible in the binary world of black and white where digitalization is progressing. It's a real Hamlet situation.

I have been blessed with wonderful co-stars and co-creators since "Meridian Enshrinement".

The new members are also really charming.stay tuned!

◆Comment from Yuki Nomura

I'm Yuki Nomura, and I'll play the role of Hamlet.I played Hamlet in a reading performance in February this year, but this time I finally had the opportunity to go on stage as a full-fledged straight play for the first time.I would like to make it my goal to perform the Hamlet image of his father, who is also his teacher, by skillfully incorporating it into myself.I would like you to look forward to me, who is a little different from the usual classical performing arts.

Comment from Keito Okamoto

Having been exposed to Shakespeare's works since I was a child, I longed to spin Shakespeare's words.Under the direction of Mansai Nomura, I would like to work hard in rehearsals so that the audience can feel the story of Hamlet, which I was once fascinated by, and live as a character on the stage.

Comment from Sawako Fujima

This is my first Shakespeare play.
To be honest, I am intimidated by the overwhelming presence of Hamlet, but I would like to dive into the world created by Mansai Nomura.
How can this work, which was made about 400 years ago, be delivered to the hearts of people today?
I have a lot of worries until the curtain opens, and I want to face them sincerely.
I am also very much looking forward to co-starring with Yuki Nomura, who lives in the same world of classical performing arts.
I feel like a Hamlet like no other is born.

Comment from Yasuki Tokuzawa

It was when I had just entered theater school that I thought, "What kind of processed meat is that?"Salaryman or actor?Still struggling with life, I felt sympathy for Hamlet, who lamented the world around him.His beautiful sigh miraculously saved my heart. (Someday, I want to face this work head-on.) It's been 15 years since then.I feel honored from the bottom of my heart that I have been blessed with the opportunity to re-encounter Hamlet.

◆ Comment from Kunitaro Kawarasaki

I have had a long relationship with Mr. Namboku and Mr. Mokuami, but this is my first time with Mr. William.I am very grateful to be able to meet new people and take on challenges in the year that will be a turning point in my life.I am excited and excited to see how my experience in Kabuki can be applied to Shakespeare's Hamlet. While seeking new possibilities, I would like to fully enjoy the world of Shakespeare.

Comment from Takehiro Murata

Actually...I've been an actor for over 40 years, and this is the first time I've been involved with Shakespeare...
It's not that I was avoiding it, but for some reason there was no edge.I had read the play, so when I pulled it out of the warehouse and read it again, it was very fresh! It's a happy thing to be able to take on new challenges after the XNUMXth birthday~
And since it's directed by Mansai-san, I'm sure it will be a Hamlet that I've never seen before, so I'm looking forward to it...
That being said, this is my first time playing Shakespeare, so with the help of my co-stars, I will study from the beginning.

◆ Comment from Mayumi Wakamura

Kingship of Denmark belongs to the Queen!Kawai said."Frailty, thy name is woman," his son says to his mother Gertrude, who married his brother after the death of the previous king. Why didn't her mother let her son succeed her and she got married? The battle with director Mansai begins! A reunion with the members I had the pleasure of working with on "Meridian no Enshrinement" ♡ Yuki-san, Keito-san, Sawako-san, and Sawazawa-san, who are full of honesty and fresh power, are sure to be fun!

opening comment

Director and cast Mansai Nomura, cast Yuuki Nomura, Keito Okamoto, Sawako Fujima, Yasuki Kakuzawa, Takehiro Murata, Kunitaro Kawarazaki, and Mayumi Wakamura commented on their feelings after the preview performance (3/6). Arrived.

◆ Mansai Nomura

Yuuki Nomura, Keito Okamoto, Sawako Fujima, Yasuki Tomazawa, and other fresh faces, Mayumi Wakamura, Takehiro Murata, Kunitaro Kawarasaki, and other members of "Sacred Meridian".From young to veteran, we have practiced repeatedly in a group with comprehensive strength that brings together the charms of each to our heart's content.

The audience of the preview performance was highly focused and quietly, but depending on the scene, they watched with laughter. We are confident that we can get off to a good start for this “All Japan Hamlet Company” and make further progress.

For me, the performance at the Setagaya Public Theater, where I served as artistic director for 20 years, can be called the culmination.Eventually, I would like to make a work that hits the world. For that reason, I would like to receive everyone's sophistication in Setagaya, Edogawa, and Hirakata and polish it greatly. Please look forward to it.

I'm envious of Hamlet, Yuki, who played the way I wanted to play.

◆Yuki Nomura

In the rehearsal hall, I have been practicing various things, but I felt the joy of actually performing in front of the audience, and I also discovered something by performing while being watched and heated by the audience, and I felt grateful for the preview performance. bottom.

This story is a work that allows customers to relive the character of Hamlet. We hope that visitors will be able to see the process of Hamlet's conflicts and struggles, find an answer, and die, from the same standpoint as Hamlet's friend Horatio, and become a witness.I hope you can find out what kind of person Hamlet was and what kind of answers he came up with before dying.

I think that everyone in life sometimes stands at a fork in the road of “to be, or not to be”.We hope that this work "Hamlet" will give you an opportunity to think about your own "To be, or not to be".We are waiting for you at the theater.

◆Keito Okamoto

I am honored to be able to write the words of Shakespeare that I have longed for.At the preview performance, I felt that the final piece of the drama "Hamlet" was completed by the audience watching over me.There is a feeling that we created "Hamlet" together with our customers.

Even after reading the play and rehearsing, there were times when I still couldn't fully understand it. I think I understand a little.

Starting at the Setagaya Public Theater, we will also visit Edogawa and Hirakata. There may be some difficult images, but I think that Mr. Mansai's wonderful direction makes it a "Hamlet" that anyone can enjoy without hesitation.I wish I could tell more people about the world of Shakespeare that I have always been fascinated by...Please experience it at the theater.

◆ Sawako Fujima

The practice period of about a month and a half has passed so quickly, and we have arrived at the first day.
When I put on the costume, stand on stage, and listen to the lines uttered by the co-stars, Shakespeare's words reach my heart more obediently than in the rehearsal room. I feel like I was able to do it.I would like to run through the company with all the members until the end of the day safely.
We are waiting for you at the theater to see how this Mansai-san's version of Hamlet, which will be performed more than 400 years after its premiere, will be felt by everyone living in Reiwa.

◆Yasuoki Tokuzawa

My role, Horatio, is Hamlet's schoolmate and confidant, played by Yuki Nomura.By the way, I will be 3 in March. On the other hand, Yuki is currently 40 years old.Huh, schoolmate?Wouldn't you rather be a teacher? You thought so.Rest assured. The age difference is covered with a play.We share the same dressing room. The mental distance between us is getting closer day by day, and even at the preview performances, many plays that weren't there until yesterday spontaneously occurred.Good trend.Blemishes that were not there until yesterday appeared spontaneously.I can't do this, so I don't neglect skin care. Please pay attention to the hamhole combination that will strengthen the bond more and more.

◆Takehiro Murata

First Shakespeare play. The use and enumeration of words is very difficult and can be interpreted in various ways.I understand well the meaning that many actors wanted to challenge until now.I'm more nervous because I want to keep brushing up every day, and I want you to enjoy it as long as you see it.

When you think of Shakespeare, you may have an image of long lines and difficult to understand, but as you would expect from Mr. Mansai's direction, it is a "Hamlet" that has never been seen before, both visually and aurally. I think that there.I would be happy if you could watch over me with warm eyes.

Kunitaro Kawarasaki

I've been practicing for about a month and a half. This was my first attempt at writing a Shakespeare play, and every day I felt the ingenuity, fun, and difficulty of the words. While I felt it was difficult, I am grateful that you have made it possible to make the best use of the performances that I myself have worked so hard to achieve.

I hope you can feel the strange harmony between Western dramas and Japanese-style costumes and art.We hope that you will enjoy the new "Hamlet", a collaboration of Japanese and Western styles.

◆ Mayumi Wakamura

We are happy to open the curtain! For about three and a half hours, the play was completed thanks to the breathing of the audience who laughed and clapped their hands. And I felt that the source of this tragedy was also Hamlet's mother's unconscious sin.

The queen, who welcomed the spring of this world as a "woman", was born as an unprecedented Gertrude thanks to the process of reaching the end as a "mother" without changing the lines.

If you know the synopsis, I think you will be able to enjoy it even more.Don't miss "To be, or not to be" for Gertrude! We are waiting for you at the theater.
