Popular rakugo artist Ichinosuke Shunputei presents a showcase of traditional Japanese comedy and performance that children and adults alike will enjoy!

Setagaya Public Theatre (SePT) has presented an array of traditional Japanese comedy and performance showcases since the theatre’s opening. In 2020, SePT began the Setagaya Summer Rakugo series, and that series is returning once again this year.
This series features and is produced by Ichinosuke Shunputei. He is renowned as the most popular and skillful rakugo (traditional Japanese comedic storytelling) artist alive, due to his charming and accessible delivery and his comedic style that modernizes and radically remixes classic rakugo. Even before achieving the rank of rakugo master, he won awards including the NHK Award for New Performers and the Agency of Cultural Affairs Award for New Performers. After being promoted to the rank of master in 2012, he has continued to receive awards including the National Engei Hall Hanagata Engei Grand Prize and the Asakusa Performing Arts Award for New Performers. Beyond performance, he has been active in a wide variety of other fields, including giving talks on radio programs and writing columns for magazines and newspapers.
In addition to traditional Japanese comedic storytelling, each installment of the Setagaya Summer Rakugo series features a wide variety of traditional performing arts. This allows audience members to experience firsthand what’s so engaging and amazing about traditional popular entertainment and traditional comic storytelling.

The afternoon show is an introduction to traditional performance that is great for children, featuring a dynamic traditional spinning top performance by Monnosuke Mimasu. In this traditional performance art, called “kyokugoma” in Japanese, performers balance spinning tops of different sizes on fans and move them across wires. This show will be fun for the whole family!
The evening show is an authentic rakugo showcase that will be enjoyable for anyone, whether you’re a newcomer to rakugo or a rakugo expert. This is a rare opportunity to fully experience a night of traditional comic storytelling by Ichinosuke Shunputei. This performance will also feature Koneko Edoya, who demonstrates the skills and traditions of the Edoya school of comedy performance with his animal imitations.
Don’t miss this year’s lively showcase of traditional comedy and performance art at SePT!
