Taiwan’s Formosa Circus Art (FOCA) is one of Asia’s premier circus companies, and  Setagaya Public Theatre (SePT) is proud to present a screening of their wildly popular work Wukong: Before the Journey to the West!

This performance uses a bold combination of traditional Taiwanese music and circus techniques like tumbling and aerial silk performance to tell the story of the beloved character Sun Wukong from the classic Journey to the West, covering the period from Wukong’s birth from a stone until his confined in Gogyozan.
This story’s one of a kind hero bounds across the stage and flies through the air. We’re sure you’ll love this rare chance to experience FOCA’s dynamic performance on the big screen.
This event also features a live performance inspired by Wukong: Before the Journey to the West, performed by a group of internationally touring circus artists from Japan.

And after the screening, we will deliver a live performance that is inspired by Wukong: Before the Journey to the West and is jam packed with the charm of the circus by Japanese artists!

What is Formosa Circus Art?

Originally founded as MIX Acrobatics Theatre in 2009, the company began performing as Formosa Circus Art (FOCA) in 2014. “Formosa,” meaning “beautiful Island,” is another name for Taiwan. FOCA explores new and unique methods of physical expression, mixing together elements including modern circus art, acrobatics, street culture, theatre, juggling, and dance. FOCA has received widespread acclaim for its touring performances throughout Europe and Asia, including a production at the Avignon Festival.
