Japanese and South Korean dancers of the same age challenge photographer Araki’s world!
Genshoku Shodo — Dancers in the Paradise
Tsuyoshi Shirai and Kim Sung Yong, two dancers of the same generation who are active in their respective home countries of Japan and South Korea, have created a dance performance in which various photographs from Nobuyoshi Ariaki’s photo collection Ojo Shashu — Higashi no Sora/Paradise clash and blend together on the stage. This exciting international collaboration, which has been three years in the making, will be performed live at Setagaya Public Theatre in February 2016.
The dancers, both of whom were born in 1976, have visited to each other’s countries, enthusiastically exchanged opinions, and communicated through dance. During that process, the word Shodo (meaning “impulse or “urge”) used in the title grew out of their interaction. As they dance, two contrasting impulses each inspired by Araki’s intense photographic world clash on stage at Setagaya Public Theatre.
Please don’t miss this memorable dance production, which is coming to the Tokyo stage after being fully reworked following its previous run of performances in Kyoto in September 2015.
