Overview

German playwright Bertolt Brecht, who was drafted into the military during World War I, produced many plays with strong social themes, including works that appealed to the war and satirized capitalism. At the same time, he advocated methods such as epic drama and catabolic effects, and his great achievements have earned him the reputation of being the greatest playwright of the 20th century.

The theater's artistic director, Akira Shirai, was also greatly influenced by Brecht. Shirai has previously directed ``The Threepenny Opera'' (directed in 2007, appeared in 18), ``The Rise and Fall of Mahagonny'' (directed, performed script, and translated in 16), and ``Mann ist Mann'' (planned and supervised in 19). He has worked on a number of Brecht's works, including ``The Rise of Arturo Ui'' (20, re-performed and directed in 21-22). Shirai, who has focused on Brecht's critical critique of society and illuminated modern society, will now take on the challenge of directing Brecht's masterpiece, ``The Good Man of Setsan.''
