Setagaya Public Theater Lecture 2006

The series <Critique of the Performing Arts> is a course in which students practice criticism of theater and dance. The term "criticism" here does not necessarily mean judging whether a work is good or bad, or developing ideas and arguments using art as a material.By coming into contact with the expressions of others, I will transmit what I feel and think in my own way to another person.Let's call this activity "criticism" for the time being.Of course, in contemporary art, creation and criticism are two sides of the same coin.In order to reconsider the performing arts from a creative perspective, we expect students to actively speak and discuss.

In this course, in the first half of the schedule, each student will try to write a review of about 2000 characters on several stage works that will be performed at the same time.Through this process, we aim to share and interact with each other's interests and awareness, while at the same time considering the major issues related to the current state of the performing arts, we will explore the basics of "critique" that goes beyond mere impressions and impressions. increase. In the second half, lectures and discussions will be held based on this, and after examining the perspectives and methods for reading and understanding the stage work, the participants will finally critique the theme and work that they have found in 4000 to 8000 characters. Aim to write.Outstanding works may be published in the magazines "SPT" (published by Setagaya Public Theater) and "Butai Geijutsu" (published by Kyoto University of Art and Design Performing Arts Research Center).

For those who want to enrich their theater experience by broadening their perspective on the performing arts, for those who want to write theater and dance criticism, and for those who want to exchange opinions on the current performing arts. We welcome the participation of a wide range of students.
