Contemporary Noh Collection is a series deviced and supervised by Mansai Nomura, who has been initiating new projects since when he was appointed artistic director of Setagaya Public Theatre.
Based on the policies of his artistic direction, “creation of repertoires,” “international dissemination of performing arts” and “fusion of traditional performing arts and contemporary theatre,” Mansai Nomura, whose background is traditional performing arts, sought to convey the wisdom and sophistication of the classic to the contemporary and to revitalize creation of performing arts in our time, which gave birth to this series.

This series has presented Contemporary Noh Collection I: AOI/KOMACHI (written and directed by Takeshi Kawamura, 2003 and 2007), Contemporary Noh Collection II: Motomezuka (written and directed by Tatsuo Kaneshita, 2004), Contemporary Noh Collection III: NUE (written and directed by Akio Miyazawa, 2006), Contemporary Noh Collection IV: The Diver (written and directed by Hideki Noda, 2008), and Contemporary Noh Collection V: Shuntokumaru, Shunkan-san, Ai no Kodo.

Tomohiro Maekawa, who won both Kinokuniya and Yomiuri Theatre Awards in 2010 and has been active as the most promising theatre maker, writes a new play for Setagaya Public Theatre again in 2011.
His Kikkai—A Story Told by Yakumo Koizumi, which was presented at Theatre Tram in 2009, chose four short “ghost stories” by Yakumo Koizumi and employed “katarimono” as its narrative structure: as soon as the narrator started to tell a story, the characters freely moved between the fiction and the reality wittily expressing mysterious episodes, which was “a bit scary” but “compulsively funny.”
The new piece in 2011 uses the methodology of Kikkai again.
The motif is changed from Yakumo Koizumi to “kyogen” and “noh,” and the piece comically portrays ordinary people as kyogen does while depicting the existence of spirit beyond “emotion” and “curse,” transcending space and time freely as noh does.
Moving freely between times and spaces of the classic and the contemporary and through Maekawa’s peculiar style, a world where reality and fantasy intersect emerges as in a ghost story in the midnight at a summer festival.
