Setagaya Public Theatre newly launches a series of newly-translated performances at the solid space of Theatre Tram for reinterpretation of excellent oversea plays, further developing the cooperation with young directors that we discovered through “Reading the Japanese texts—Performances in the Form of Drama Reading” started in 2008.

The director of the first production of this series is Kenichi Tani, whose thorough interpretation and accurate spatial construction for Yukio Mishima’s Tropical Tree were highly regarded in “Reading the Japanese texts Part 3” in 2010. This time he works on Brian Friel’s Molly Sweeney translated by the director himself.
The play by the prominent contemporary playwright of Ireland, Brian Friel, was premiered in London in 1994 and was presented in Broadway in 1996 winning the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Play.
The intense story of Molly Sweeny, who has lived without sight for 40 years, is told by performers with strong presence: Kaho Minami, Kensaku Kobayashi and Kazuyuki Aijima.
Experience the play at the theatre!
