From July to August 2015, Setagaya Public Theater will present Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida as a joint production with Bungakuza and the Hyogo Performing Arts Center.This work, whose main characters are men and women who are tossed about in war, is tragic, but also contains many comedic, comedy, and satirical elements, making it the most difficult to classify among Shakespeare's works. It is a work that is said to be.For this reason, it is known as a work that is rarely performed not only in Japan but also around the world.
This time, the one-of-a-kind production will be directed by Hitoshi Uyama of Bungakuza, one of Japan's leading directors who has worked on many of Shakespeare's works. At the 2010 Yomiuri Theater Awards Grand Prize, Best Film and Best Director Award, and Arts Award for the 22 Yomiuri Theater Awards at the same time as Troilus and Cressida. Uyama, who won the Science Minister's Prize, will once again take on the challenge of a Shakespeare masterpiece.Playing the leading role Troilus is Kenji Urai, who just won the XNUMXnd Yomiuri Theater Award for Best Actor this year.She also starred in the above-mentioned "Henry VI", and won the Kinokuniya Theater Award for Individual Award and the Yomiuri Theater Award for Haruko Sugimura.The golden combination of Shakespeare, Hitoshi Uyama and Kenji Urai will mark a new page in the history of Shakespeare performances in Japan.

Because it is a "controversial work" with few performances among Shakespeare's plays, it will be a work that evokes fresh emotions and shocks that cannot be experienced in other works.

Kenji Urai
All of the cast trusted Uyama-san's direction and practiced every day.Both the actors and the staff are uplifted that the teamwork that has been united has reached the audience as a message, and the response that was more than expected was returned like a catch ball.In order to be able to give presents that are sure to satisfy our customers, I want to complete the final performance without missing any members.

Sonim
Under the direction of Mr. Uyama, we are transmitting the message of this work as a company, but I felt that the "color" of this work is ultimately determined by how the audience perceives it on that day. rice field.I've never felt that way more than with this piece.I would like to start from scratch with the feeling of welcoming the first day every day, face the customers of the day, and create this work.

Kenichi Okamoto
I've been practicing with all my heart and soul, so I'm happy to have a good reaction from the audience.Each and every character can be the main character in this work, and I think that each customer decides what is the core of the work.I also felt that the fact that there is no end to this work is similar to life.I think that each time I watch it, the part that touches my heartstrings will be different, so I'm really looking forward to the end of the season.

Toru Watanabe
For some time now, my seniors at Bungakuza have said that the audience is the final director, but I feel that the final energy has been injected into the performance on the first day.Once again, I realize the fun of the work.I think it's the ideal form of theater where the audience enjoys it from the bottom of their hearts and something remains at the end.Thank you very much for your good work and good customers.

Tomohiko Imai
There are not many plays where the audience reacts as much as this time, betraying our expectations.I was impressed by how well you understood the parts that I would have overlooked if I had just read the text.Mr. Uyama is a director who reminds the actors of the importance of pursuing what is contained in each line.In the course of directing, he told us that we have to go that far, especially in a complicated work like this one.

Yokota Eiji
I felt that "practice will not betray you".I am proud of the fact that I was able to train tenaciously under Mr. Uyama's direction, and on the first day, even though the accumulation was still small, I think it paid off.Now I finally understand the meaning of Bungakuza's traditional teaching of "Leave your mark on the stage," when playing the daring character Achilles.From now on, I want to make it even better by multiplying it with other roles.

Eisaku Yoshida

Translator Yuji Odashima, director Hitoshi Uyama, and performers Kenji Urai, Sonin, Kenichi Okamoto, Toru Watanabe, Tomohiko Imai, Eiji Yokota, Eisaku Yoshida, and Toru Emori will be on stage. He talked about his enthusiasm for the performances in July and August.
