Beginning of the Showa era.The old family "Darumaya" in a cold village in the Tohoku region has fallen into disrepair, and the heir, Manzaburo (Katsumi Takahashi), has not heard from him for three years after he left for the South Seas to work.
In the end, the house where the old mother Okaji (Kayoko Shiraishi) and her daughter Oshima (Noriko Eguchi) live is taken as a debt, and the creditors are even competing for old tatami mats and sliding doors.
There, Okaji's sister-in-law Otori (Suzuki Kyoka), who was once kicked out for her misdeeds, shows up for the first time in more than ten years with a good flair.
