The world of Tanizaki in the 21st century created by the genius Simon McBurney.
Performed at Setagaya Public Theater!
A joint production by the Setagaya Public Theater and Complicite, "Shunkin" premiered at the Setagaya Public Theater in February 2008 and was re-performed in March 2, directed by the genius Simon McBurney.
Simon won the Yomiuri Theater Award for Best Director, and Fukatsu won the Kinokuniya Theater Award for Individual Award and the Yomiuri Theater Award for Outstanding Actress. The work was highly acclaimed.
"Shunkin" is based on Junichiro Tanizaki's novel "Shunkinsho" and essay "In Praise of Shadows".
In "In Praise of Shadows," Tanizaki depicts the ultimate love between Haruko, who became a shamisen instructor despite being blind at an early age, and Sasuke, a servant who devotedly takes care of her clothing, food and shelter. It incorporates the “Japanese aesthetics that exists in the shadows”.
A simple stage set that emphasizes the movements of the actors, lighting with rich shadows, and the sound of the shamisen that remains strong in the ear.A dense and multi-layered story unfolds in a sophisticated stage space.
McBurney's strong sense of beauty and the aesthetics of Japanese culture are condensed everywhere.Also, one of the highlights is the unique performance in which the puppets play Shunkin when they were young, and then the actors take turns playing.
And in November, performances at the Barbican Theater in London and then at the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris were sold out every day.The audience was captivated and the performance ended successfully.After the triumphant return performance at the Setagaya Public Theater, we are planning to perform in Taiwan.
This time, Yoshi Oida, who appeared at the premiere, has been decided to appear, and the wonderful ensemble of 10 unique performers has been reborn as an even more spectacular work.
