“Nohgaku present tense” is active in pursuit of all possibilities of Nohgaku. With a history of 600 years, Nohgaku will rediscover its appeal as a "theater" and attempt to open up further possibilities as a performing art.

This time, we will welcome the up-and-coming Kanze-style shite-kata as a guest, and we will perform "Takasago", a semi-noh play suitable for the new year, and "Handan", a noh play with condensed fantastical and theatrical elements.
Please look forward to the “present tense” of Noh that is transmitted from the theater space, which is unique to the Setagaya Public Theater.

Noh actor Seiji Katayama, who appeared in "Noh present tense theatrical version @ Setagaya", talked about "Noh present tense" at the post-talk after the performance of "Kunitojin" on December 12th.
"Noh present tense" challenges the new possibilities of Noh with novel and novel attempts every time.What kind of stage will it be this time?stay tuned! !

Mansai：Could you tell us a little bit about the highlights of Takasago and Handan?

(I.e.: I was watching it thinking that the Noh play "Handan" had something in common with "Kunitojin". "Handan" is a story in which the main character embarks on a journey to find "himself."However, this is troublesome, and when people think about who they are, they are very confused.There is probably no correct answer to that question, but I find out that there is no correct answer.I think that itself is very foolish, but in any case, they move around the stage in search of precious knowledge.
Then the hostess of bad quality (Ai, the role of Mansai-san this time) appears, and it's a suspicion.

Mansai: By cheating, you just happened to lend me a pillow, didn't you? (laughs)

(I.e.: That pillow is a habit, dreaming with a pillow.During that dream, I had a lifetime's worth of experiences and woke up from my sleep.However, it doesn't open up something like that great enlightenment.For example, adolescence is really a sloppy thing, but I think everyone has one or two thoughts that remind them of it, flash back, and feel embarrassed.I think that the act of watching "Handan" is to remind you of such thoughts once again.

Mansai:I see.thank you very much.
And I think that "Takasago" should be seen as a kind of dance drama.

(I.e.: I will do my best not to fall off the stage in "Takasago" (laughs)

Mansai: If you make a special stage shape that is different from the Noh stage, people will hate you.

(I.e.: Yes, last time, during the rehearsal, there was a moment when I was on stage and said, “Wow!” (laughs). "Are you okay?!" "Should we change it?" the staff said, but Mr. Mansai said, "Let's keep it as it is." (Audience laughs)

Mansai: It must have been difficult.Despite the narrow field of vision due to the Noh mask, there was a cross bridge in the center, and there was a difference in height.In addition to that, it was a stage that expressed four pillars with pillars of light.

(I.e.: Moreover, the floor is slippery and I can not stop.And this time...

Mansai: Oops, please don't reveal the story yet (laughs).Regarding the next stage, I would like to have a secret discussion after this and decide.
