The world of Tanizaki in the 21st century created by the genius Simon McBurney.
A repeat performance has already been decided at the Setagaya Public Theater!

It premiered at the Setagaya Public Theater in February 2003, following the 2008 "Elephant Vanish," which was created by the genius Simon McBurney based on Haruki Murakami's short story, co-produced by the Setagaya Public Theater and Complicite. "Shunkin".
``If Westerners judge things from the Aristotelian dualism of right and wrong, good and evil, the Japanese see the world as a continuous, unified collective,'' says McBurney, Tanizaki. I sympathized with Jun'ichiro's critique of civilization, and created this work with the motif of Tanizaki's novel "Shunkinsho" and essay "In Praise of Shadows". "Shunkin" is a creative work with a meticulous production that pierces the beauty and sensibility of Japan throughout the entire story, which brilliantly depicts Tanizaki's words that Japanese aesthetics exist in "Aya of shadows". was highly acclaimed as

In 2009, after performing in London, the triumphant return performance will be held at the Setagaya Public Theater in March.
This time, it will be a repeat performance, and we plan to perform it based on the production of the first performance. , It will be reborn as a further upgraded work.
Please enjoy it at the theater.

===========================================
An interview with Eri Fukatsu has arrived.

Directed by Simon McBurney, "Shunkin", which premiered in the spring of 08, will be performed again soon.First in London, then in Tokyo. While all the performers played multiple roles, it was Eri Fukatsu who mainly played the role of Shunkin. It seems that she felt a great response in her first Simon work. Before she left for her rehearsal in London, she spoke with her.

--I think Simon's playmaking is like a series of workshops.
Anyway, I had heard rumors that it would be difficult, so I was immune (laughs). So I never thought it would be so painful. It was rather fun. I was more surprised that there was a way to make it like this.Usually there is a script first, but Simon was different.I started by analyzing Junichiro Tanizaki's novels and digging deeper. I was shocked when I thought, ``We're all going to create the lines together,'' (laughs). However, since there is no correct answer, the joy that no matter what I do, it will lead to something, and the joy of seeing it take shape was very fresh.
――So you create it with everyone.
Every day, you come to the rehearsal hall with various ideas.I could feel everyone's head spinning. There are days when things don't go well, but there's a reason for that, and Simon finds a breakthrough.I didn't feel like I was being forced to do it, and I learned a lot from the work of connecting everyone together, and I think I spent a luxurious time.
――What kind of work did you do specifically?
For example, in the beginning, we were divided into groups and acted out part of the novel. Each group has a different way of expressing themselves, so it's really interesting to watch.I think that Simon probably wanted to see how Japanese people feel and express themselves, because it is not just his own ideas, but Japanese culture. He respected that very much.Conversely, I was surprised by Simon's interpretation, and I think the two were successfully combined.
――Shunkin is expressed as a puppet halfway through.Fukatsu-san also used dolls at first, but wasn't it difficult?
Shortly after rehearsals began, I was suddenly told, ``A doll teacher is coming, so please do a workshop with me.''No one had heard of it, so I was surprised, but anyway, I received intense training for about two full days (laughs). However, after that I had nothing to do with dolls, and it was not until much later that I decided to use dolls.
――The characteristic of Simon's work is that there is no final form, and it changes day by day.
It changed even after the performance began, and when Simon greeted the audience on the first day, he said, "This is still the process of creating, so I want the audience to enjoy it together and participate in that process." Stay.(laughs)But it's true that living people are doing it, so it's natural that it changes. That's why I didn't feel any pressure during the actual performance, and it was a different feeling from what I've been acting up until now.I really feel like I'm starting from nothing. It's a strange feeling, maybe it's the feeling that everyone joined hands to create it.I was improvising every day, so maybe I thought I could be okay no matter what.Working with Simon has made me feel like I can do anything, and I feel like I've become stronger.
――Are there any words from Simon that left an impression on you?
There are many things, but I was told, "Don't hide behind the wings of the stage, always stay on stage."I want you to be there as an existence that has been living forever. You have to think for yourself why you are there. It was refreshing to find something that I could do, not just because my role was over.
――What do you think about the role of Shunkin?
We were all analyzing what kind of person Haruko was, and what kind of person Sasuke was, so I think we were looking at the role of Haruko objectively. It was also useful in moving the puppets.
I think Haruko is a very complicated role. She has a similar upbringing and she is a very lonely and mysterious woman. She thought that she might not be interesting in the way she "acts".She felt again the splendor of Simon's direction.
――How are you mentally preparing for the repeat performance?
It's the first time for me to "play again", so I'm looking forward to what will happen to me.
The cast will change a little, and I'm sure Simon will do something different from the premiere (laughs).I also feel like creating something new. It's my first time to perform in London, so I still don't know what's going to happen (laughs). But I would like to do my best to make it a good one.
(December 2008, interviewed by Miyako Sawa)
